FORT WASHINGTON, MD - Division 25 Potomac Guardian Fifth District Southern Region Auxiliarists, as part of the USCG “Compass” mission, conducted a public affairs event during the two day National River Bass Tournament at the Washington National Harbor on June 2-3, 2011. The mission of the “Compass” program is to deploy active duty, reserve, civilian, and Auxiliarists into their communities to increase America's understanding and awareness of the Coast Guard.

The activities kicked-off with a reception on the evening of June 2, 2011, and was followed with an event along the docks of the National Harbor on June 3, 2011. Organizing the event was Division 25 Commander Ernest Stevens and was supported by Auxiliarists and watchstanders from Flotillas 25-1 and 25-7.

“Living Classrooms” of the National Capital Region, in partnership with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and FLW Outdoors, brought 300 underserved local Washington, DC students by the busloads to fish and join the National River Bass Tournament. The tournament annually provides these youngsters with a hands-on fishing and boating experience. The purpose is to increase their exposure to, and appreciation for, our nation's natural resources.

This unique and lively competition hosted urban students, federal natural resource agencies, corporate sponsors, and other public and private organizations. Their primary goal to is connect the youngsters to the outdoors and teach them about sustainable catch, conservation and recreational fishing and safe boating.

The Nation's River Bass Tournament offers students an opportunity to fish (most of the students for the first time) with volunteer bass anglers, corporate partners and agency heads. USCG Auxiliary promoted boating safety and discussed the proper use of life jackets, the "Wear-It" program, and distributed various boating safety pamphlets and coloring books.

The public affairs event also highlights our USCG Sea Partners mascot "Sammy the Sea-Otter", and our safeboat "Coastie" and provided main attraction to kids of all ages.
