Auxiliarist Richard Vernor (circa 1942)

Aventura, FL, April 26 - In 1942, my great uncle, Richard Vernor, launched his membership into the newly formed Coast Guard Auxiliary from his summer home in Bay View Michigan.

He had just taken delivery of a brand new 38’ mahogany Chris Craft that he volunteered as a Coast Guard Auxiliary facility. The Auxiliary quickly accepted his offer and the beautiful mahogany vessel's hull was immediately painted OD (olive drab) 38 T-1 CGA to comply with Coast Guard requirements. See attached photos.

For those of you old enough to remember, F. Dudleigh Vernor, uncle Dick’s son wrote the music for the “The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi", which Richard Vernor published. And some of you may even remember Vernor’s Ginger Ale, the oldest surviving ginger ale sold in the United States.
