Flotilla 17-11 teaches 275 campers during the Osceola County “Superhero” Cub Scout Camp It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s boating safety instructor Auxiliarist John Holmes of Flotilla 17-11 and his team of “super heroes!” Recently the flotilla participated in the Osceola County (FL) “Superhero” themed Cub Campout.

This was the perfect opportunity to teach boating safety while also providing young Cub Scouts with education that fulfilled elective requirements toward earning Scout badges. Other “superheros” included police, fire, various branches of the military and real-life action figures.

Utilizing the “Boating Fun - Safety on the Water” program, Flotilla Commander John Holmes, with Auxiliarists Jim Nickles, George Ward, Richard Navas, and Antonio Burgos with Petty Officer John Stilwell of Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral, FL conducted three, one hour classes to Scouts from all across Osceola County, FL. Activities included trying on various sized life jackets, life jacket relay races and a hands-on hypothermia demonstration.

Events like these are the perfect way to reach out to our youth, have some fun, and make a difference while fulfilling our mission to promote boating safety. This event was also a great time to provide boating information, upcoming public education classes and to recruit scouting parents into the Auxiliary.
