War of 1812 Coast Guardsmen Color Guard |
Division 5, of Hampton Roads Virginia held their annual Change of Watch Ceremony the 14th of January at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club with a visit from the War of 1812 Coast Guardsmen.
Building up anticipation of "Operation Sail 2012" and the 200th anniversary of the "Star Spangled Banner", the colors were presented by the United States Coast Guard Historical Ships Company (CGHSC). Formed by educators and interpreters including active duty Coast Guard and Auxiliarists from Southeast Virginia, the CGHSC will follow "Operation Sail 2012" to its port of calls including Norfolk, Boston, New Orleans, and New York.

The living history crew features period-uniformed interpreters who present interactive displays regarding activities, life and conditions found aboard 19th century revenue cutters. The program also provides the public an opportunity to participate in hands-on educational activities and historical vignettes provided by the interpreters.
Continuing a new tradition at the Change of Watch, the Division 5 Brass Quintet provided music and ambiance to the proceedings. Members of the quintet include: Auxiliarists Sherry Wozniak, Dr. John Chenault, Dave Enlow, Keith Barber, and Al Crandell.
Mike Eberhardt and John Morrow were elected to a second term as Division Commander and Vice Commander, respectfully. Following their oaths of office, Division Staff Officers and Flotilla Commanders' were sworn into office.
Sector Hampton Roads Commander Captain Mark Ogle, presided as guest speaker commenting on the increasing necessity of the Auxiliary and provided a year in review of the Sector's activities. Division 5-SR Commodore "Bob" Birrane spoke that "attendance was unequivocally the highest I had ever seen at any other Division Change of Watch in the past." Other guests of note for the evening were: Captain Steven Pope, USCG, Commemorative Plans and Liaison Officer, Commander Frank Pedras, USCG, Commanding Officer of Communications Area Master Station Atlantic (CAMSLANT), and Mr. Bill Burkett of the Virginia Port Authority.
Demonstrating the Division's excellence in maritime safety, public education and training, over 60 awards were presented to various Auxiliarists. These awards included three Meritorious Team Commendations and two Commandant's Letter of Commendation. Michelle Thornton was awarded Division Auxiliarist of the Year while Michael Hanson received the New Auxiliarist of the Year award.
