Color Guard at start of parade |
Team Coast Guard for the second time in two years participated in one of America’s oldest and second largest St. Patrick’s Day parades. Held this year on March 18, this was the 111th annual South Boston parade.
Coast Guard Sector Boston responded to the participation request by tasking a 25 foot patrol boat on a trailer and a crew of five active duty personnel. The D1-SR Auxiliary responded by sending the Division 12 Color Guard as well as a dozen volunteers from local flotillas.
The parade was a tremendous success. Team Coast Guard was greeted by the crowds with much enthusiasm as they were joined in the march by units of the Army and Navy. They voiced their appreciation for the great service we provide to the sea-going community and the many lives we’ve saved over the years.
Quite often, spectators stepped out of the crowd to be photographed with a crewperson or with our “Coastie” mascot. The parade followed a four mile route through the hilly, winding and quite often narrow streets of South Boston. It was estimated that over 700,000 persons viewed the parade.
